Alan Love presented a public lecture "Chance, Evolution, and the Burgess Shale" at the Whyte Museum in Banff as part of the Calgary Summer Institute. The lecture introduces a central theme of our project to the general public and is now posted online. The Calgary Summer Institute included two seminar discussions on professional philosophers engaging with those outside the field. One concerned engaging colleagues within the academy, and the other concerned engaging communities beyond the academy. Although we rarely reach consensus in our discussions, we agreed that the challenges of reaching beyond the academy will be better achieved if we reach out to engage particular communities outside the academy (that is, move beyond the idea of reaching out to “the public").
